Safety and Training Supervisor

The job of the Safety and Training Supervisor is done for the purpose of ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant transportation of students through exceptional leadership, comprehensive driver education, and regulatory compliance of district drivers. This position oversees the recruitment, classroom instruction, and behind-the-wheel training of all personnel, while maintaining precise records and investigating accidents to improve departmental safety protocols.

Requirements:

1. Educational Level: High School diploma/GED

2. Certification/License Required: Valid Commercial Driver's License required; Must have Third Party Tester Certification or obtain within first year of employment; Must have State School Bus Driver Instructor certification.

3. Experience: At least 3 years job related experience is required. Increasing level of responsibility is desired.

4. Physical Activities: Routine physical activities that are required to fulfill job responsibilities.

5. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Knowledge is required to perform basic math, understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly in English; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions in English. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: common office machines; and office methods and practices. Knowledge of Georgia traffic laws as well as federal, state, and local laws/regulations/policies/guidelines/terminology related to student transportation and commercial transportation in general. Knowledge of local roads and traffic patterns. Skills are required to perform multiple technical tasks with the need to regularly upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; preparing and maintaining accurate records; utilizing specialized software; effective leadership skills; customer service skills. Must be able to maintain all applicable licenses and certifications. Ability is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, classify, and/or collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Ability to write professional correspondence. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals. Significant problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is extensive. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; working with frequent interruptions; working as part of a team; maintaining confidentiality; being attentive to detail; meeting deadlines and schedules; adapting to changing work priorities. Ability to maintain prompt and regular attendance. Ability to occasionally lift up to 25lbs; ability to sit or stand for extended periods.

Essential Duties:

  • Develop and implement comprehensive safety and training programs (driving, equipment usage, student management, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the safe and compliant transport of students
  • Oversee classroom and behind-the-wheel training for new and existing team members for the purpose of meeting all federal, state and local regulations
  • Maintain accurate Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), DOT, and state-mandated records, including driver certifications, drug and alcohol test results, medical physicals, and fingerprint clearances for the purpose of maintaining the department's compliance with all federal, state and local regulations
  • Develop and implement a transportation safety program (accident analysis, defensive driving techniques, student management, emergency procedures, safety awards, etc.) for the purpose of creating and fostering a culture of safety which results in fewer accidents/incidents
  • Oversees the recruitment, hiring, and on-boarding processes for all new hires for the purpose of ensuring the department is properly staffed
  • Collaborates with Human Resources and other District offices in support of recruitment and hiring efforts for the purpose of ensuring vacancies are posted and applicants are efficiently processed
  • Manages the department's response to accidents/incidents (investigations, paperwork/reporting, reviewing camera footage, GPS information, driver post-accident testing, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring all applicable procedures are followed in accordance with district guidelines
  • Coordinates post-accident training and re-training efforts for the purpose of improving drivers' skills and reducing the number of at-fault accidents
  • Supervises, evaluates, and coaches the Safety and Training team members for the purpose of ensuring training is efficient, effective, and meets federal, state, and local guidelines
  • Remains knowledgeable with a technical understanding of all applicable DOT standards, OSHA standards, GaDOE standards, FMCSA and ELDT requirements, federal/state/local laws for the purpose of remaining compliant with pupil transportation laws, regulations, guidelines, and best practices
  • Implements and monitors the department's on-site safety program in alignment with OSHA standards for the purpose of ensuring a safe working environment
  • Collaborates with school staff to deliver instruction of Safe Rider Practices to students for the purpose of meeting GaDOE safety requirements
  • Assists director with developing safety policies, regulations, procedures, severe weather protocols, weather cancellations, emergency response, etc. for the purpose of maintaining the department's safety standards
  • Attends meetings, conferences, and participates in training workshops, as required
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
