JOB TITLE: General Maintenance Mechanic

REPORTS TO: Maintenance Supervisor/Director of Transportation and Maintenance

ANNUAL CALENDAR DAYS: 243 (12 Months)

Position Summary: The General Maintenance Mechanic performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance, repair, and improvement of school buildings, facilities, and equipment. This position supports daily operations to ensure that all facilities in the school district are safe, functional, and maintained in accordance with state and local regulations, including those of the Alabama State Department of Education.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform general repairs and maintenance on plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and masonry systems.
• Diagnose and repair minor issues with doors, windows, floors, walls, ceilings, and furniture.
• Perform preventative maintenance tasks such as replacing filters, inspecting mechanical systems, and checking safety devices.
• Install and maintain classroom fixtures, restroom equipment, and cafeteria hardware.
• Assist licensed tradespeople (electricians, plumbers, HVAC techs) with larger projects as needed.
• Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and light equipment safely.
• Respond promptly to maintenance service requests and emergency calls during and after school hours.
• Maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and time spent.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, district safety standards, and Alabama state facility codes.
• Provide support during school events, severe weather responses, and emergency closures when needed.
• Other duties as assigned.

• High school diploma or GED.
• Minimum 2-4 years of experience in general building maintenance or construction.
• Valid Alabama driver's license with a clean driving record.
• Working knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, and mechanical systems.
• Ability to work independently, follow instructions, and prioritize tasks efficiently.
• Must pass a background check and meet all requirements set by the Alabama State Department of Education.
• High school diploma or GED.

• Experience in a school or institutional environment.
• Basic computer skills and familiarity with maintenance request systems (e.g., CMMS).
• Certification or vocational training in maintenance-related fields (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, carpentry).
• OSHA 10 or 30 certification.

• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Frequent standing, walking, bending, crawling, and climbing ladders.
• Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments, including in extreme weather conditions.
