Utilities Wastewater Collection Technician

Under the general direction of the WWC Supervisor inspects and troubleshoots lift stations to ensure proper operating condition, perform minor repairs on submersible, centrifugal, and positive displacement pumps, inspects and works on small repairs on control panels of electrical wiring, fuses, and etc., servicing of pipes, valves, and pumps. Reports major malfunctions or repairs needed; operates tractor with rotating cutter, zero turn riding lawnmower, volt meter, and various other hand held equipment and tools; ensure signaling and safety equipment is operable, checks for proper fluid levels, reports major equipment malfunctions to superintendent, operates various pieces of equipment to complete repair and construction; gathers materials, equipment, and tools needed to perform tasks; positions safety equipment at worksite and operates various equipment and tools in repairing concrete. Will supervise the Service Maintenance Worker that would be with him on larger job assignments.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. Other duties may be required, assigned, and expected aside from those set forth below to address operational needs and changing operational practices.

  • Inspects vehicle and equipment for proper operating condition and makes safety checks.
  • Using a grease gun performs lubrication services on equipment.
  • Checks oil, water, and hydraulic fluid levels of vehicles and equipment; add fluids if needed.
  • Performs minor repairs and services on equipment to include replacing blown lights, bulbs, and fuses. Inspects tires to ensure no wear or damage is visible; uses air pressure gauge to ensure tires are properly inflated.
  • Refuels vehicle and gas powered equipment as needed.
  • Ensures that safety equipment such as fire extinguisher, road markers, and flares are on board and serviceable.
  • Reports major equipment malfunctions to superintendent for repair by shop mechanics.
  • Cleans interior of vehicle and removes loose paper or debris.
  • Using water hose and cleaning solution cleans exterior of vehicles and equipment to remove mud, dirt, and debris.
  • Informs superintendent of broken, damaged, or misplaced tools and equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains hand tools and equipment.
  • Positions necessary safety equipment around work area to avoid safety hazards to include safety cones, signs.
  • Ensures that signaling and beacon lights are operating when work is in progress.
  • Operates tractor with rotating cutter to cut sewage right-of-way, outfall lines, and lift station grounds.
  • Operates hand held packer to re-pack dirt upon completion of repairs.
  • Uses chain saw to cut trees and low hanging limbs to right of ways.
  • Performs maintenance and repair on mechanical systems and components on the pumps for the sanitary sewer lift stations.
  • Reads blueprints, wiring diagrams, specifications, manuals, and sketches.
  • Troubleshoots electrical, mechanical systems.
  • Uses various hand tools to include volt meters, hammers, wrenches, and saws to perform maintenance on pumps, electrical boxes, pipe fitting, installations to cut pipe used in sewer lift station repairs.
  • Paints lift stations and caution poles with brushes and rollers.
  • Assists in performing minor building repair services to include painting.
  • Attends departmental and safety meetings.
  • Assists in performing various pipe fitting tasks, may assist in raising and rebuilding manholes.
  • Assists in maintaining grounds surrounding Utility facilities.
  • Assists in cleaning and organizing warehouse.
  • Assists in other departments as needed or upon request.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned or upon request.

Qualifications

Education & Experience Guidelines Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities required for this position would be:

Education/Training Have high school education, GED, or demonstrated level of proficiency.

Experience (6) Months of basic knowledge of troubleshooting electrical pumps and control panels.

Licenses or Certifications Required Encouraged to obtain their WWC Grade 1-C certification.

Knowledge of:

  • Lift stations, pumps, valves, and construction operations.

Ability to:

  • Read to comprehend operator manuals, directives, gauges, and indicators.
  • Prepare work orders and similar non-complex forms.
  • Communicate to issue instructions, converse with supervisor and co-workers on work-related activities.
  • Count, add, and subtract whole numbers.
  • Operate chain saw to cut low hanging limb or other debris from right-of-ways.
  • Exercise judgment particularly in tasks involving safety of self and others or efficiency of operations.
