Overview

Virginia Cancer Specialists, affiliated with McKesson Specialty Health and US Oncology, a leader in cancer care, is seeking an experienced full‑time Patient Benefit Specialist for our Bristow office. GREAT BENEFITS INCLUDE: Medical, Dental, Vision, Paid Holidays, and 401 K.

SCOPE: Under general supervision, the specialist is responsible for insurance verification and eligibility, assessment of patient financial requirements, counseling patients on insurance benefits and co‑payments, obtaining pre‑authorization of services, and maintaining accurate patient demographics. The role supports and adheres to the US Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures all insurance, demographic, and eligibility information is obtained and entered into the system accurately.
  • Performs insurance verification for all third‑party payers; obtains initial and subsequent pre‑authorization for services and surgeries.
  • Re‑verifies benefits and obtains authorization/referral after the treatment plan is discussed, prior to treatment initiation; ensures appropriate signatures are obtained on all necessary forms.
  • Utilizes the Summary of Patient Reimbursement and Liability form and obtains required approvals.
  • Performs financial counseling for all patients before treatment, covering obligations, billing practices, and payment arrangements.
  • Documents the financial counseling process and forwards it to the Billing Office.
  • Assists patients in obtaining financial assistance (e.g., Medicaid, drug replacement), outside assistance (e.g., transportation or community services), and ensures forms are completed.
  • Collects co‑pays, deductibles, and other out‑of‑pocket amounts at the time of visit.
  • Maintains manuals, logs, and other required documentation as needed.
  • Demonstrates understanding of patient confidentiality to protect patients and the clinic/corporation.
  • Follows policies and procedures to enhance front‑office efficiency; covers for and assists with other front‑office functions as requested.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; at least three years of medical business office experience involving insurance procedures and patient interaction.

Physical Demands

May require sitting for long periods, stooping, bending, stretching for files and supplies, occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds, operating a keyboard, calculator, telephone, copier. Vision 20/20 (corrected) and hearing normal for telephone contacts.

Work Environment

Office environment with frequent interaction with staff, patients, and the public. Reasonable accommodations available.
