Substitute Teacher

Job Goal: Responsible for providing instruction, managing the classroom environment, and promoting student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. The substitute teacher will implement the lesson plans provided by the teacher of record and/or administrative designee in order to ensure a safe and positive learning atmosphere for all students.

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
• Valid Alabama Substitute Teacher Certificate (or willingness to obtain)
• Previous experience in a classroom setting or working with children is preferred.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to manage a classroom and maintain a positive learning environment.
• Flexibility and adaptability to different classroom environments and grade levels.

Key Responsibilities:

• Instructional Support:
• Deliver instructional activities based on the lesson plans provided by the absent teacher.
• Provide clear instructions and engage students in the learning process.
• Adapt teaching methods to meet the diverse needs of students.
• Classroom Management:
• Maintain a disciplined and structured classroom environment.
• Enforce school policies and procedures.
• Ensure the safety and well-being of all students during class.
• Student Supervision:
• Supervise students in the classroom, during breaks and during any scheduled activities.
• Monitor student behavior and address any issues according to school policies.
• Report any incidents or concerns to the school administration promptly.
• Day to Day General Duties & Responsibilities:
• Take daily attendance and maintain accurate records as required.
• Complete any required reports or documentation.
• Follow any additional instructions left by the teacher of record or school administration.
• Communication:
• Communicate effectively with students, colleagues and school administration.
• Provide feedback to the teacher of record regarding student progress or any issues pertaining to the class.
• Collaborate with other staff members to ensure continuity of instruction and student support.
• Professional Conduct:
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student information.
• Follow the Alabama State Department of Education's Code of Ethics, Phenix City Board of Education Policy & Procedures and the Faculty & Staff Handbook of the assigned school site.
• Exhibit professionalism in all interactions and adhere to school policies.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to lift and move materials up to 25 pounds.
• Capacity to manage stressful situations effectively.

Work Schedule:

• On-call basis, depending on the needs of the school.
• Hours may vary based on the specific assignment.

Important Notes:

• Once the substitute job has closed, all who have applied will be contacted about attending a mandatory substitute orientation before you can begin subbing.
• All substitutes within the Phenix City School system must complete a background check through the State of Alabama Education Department. If you still need to do so, please complete setting up an account at aim.alsde.edu and complete a Fieldprint Background Check.
