Job Summary
This position will oversee the processing and accessibility of archival collections related to the US Military, with particular emphasis on the US Army from the 20th Century. This includes surveying collections to assess condition, address preservation needs, determine arrangement, produce and compile descriptive metadata, drafting finding aids, and identifying documents that may be sensitive and/or confidential.
The position will also engage in outreach efforts to promote the usage and accessibility of military-related archival collections. This includes working with student assistants and interns to gain hands-on archival practical and professional experience, as well as facilitate learning and research opportunities for students, faculty, and the general public. This position will also work in close collaboration with the Hallock Endowed Chair for Military History and other campus and community partners on public programming and other initiatives such as community oral history projects.
The visiting archivist position is an initial one-year appointment, renewable for an additional two years pending availability of grant funding. It is a faculty rank appointment reporting directly to the Dean of Libraries.
Responsibilities
Significant Duties & Responsibilities include: Processing of Military Related Archives (40%) - Follows specialized, established procedures for processing archival acquisitions, including surveying collections to assess condition, address preservation needs, determine arrangement, produce and compile descriptive metadata, drafting finding aids, and identifying documents that may be sensitive and/or confidential. Leads a team of student assistants and interns, providing them with valuable experiences contributing to their professional and personal growth. Works with the Digital Collections and Access Archivist on the digitization and online accessibility of military-related collections.; Research and Access Services (30%) - Supports the usage and accessibility of the collections to students, faculty, and the general public. Provides in-depth and specialized instruction on how to conduct archival primary source research. Engages in detailed one-on-one research consultations to assist students, faculty, and other scholars. Collaborates with faculty to identify research projects for integration in the curriculum.; Outreach and Engagement (10%) -Works closely with the Hallock Endowed Chair for Military History and other campus and community partners, such as the National Infantry Museum. Promotes the usage of the archives by students, faculty, and the general public. Participates in the coordination and planning of events and other programming, including workshops, exhibits, and oral history initiatives.; Service (10%) - Serves on library and university committees and engages in relevant service opportunities for the community and profession. Serves as an integral member of the Library Faculty and senior library administration to improve collections, services, and facilities.; Professional Development (10%) - Participates in professional development and continuing education endeavors for professional and personal growth and to ensure competency and currency in the discipline.
Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications include: ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS, MA in history, or equivalent.; Demonstrated experience processing archival collections.; Demonstrated experience and interest in military history and archives.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications include: Experience working in an academic or special collection archive.; Familiarity with 20th-century military history.; Working knowledge of ArchivesSpace.; Experience with community oral history projects.; Supervisory experience.
Proposed Salary
The proposed annualized salary for this position is $60,000 and includes full benefits.
