Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervises and observes inmate activities; maintains security of inmates and the general public; completes regular inmate attendance count.
- Searches inmates, equipment, and van to remove contraband.
- Administers medications and first aid to inmates; responds to inmate requests for other medical attention.
- Transports inmates to and from assignments.
- Ensures inmate compliance with state and departmental policies and procedures.
- Maintains daily reports of all accidents, incidents, and activities.
- Receives and releases inmates transferred to and from correctional facility; completes required paperwork.
- Supervises the routine cleaning and maintenance of tools and van.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities- Knowledge of modern corrections practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of Department of Corrections guidelines and federal and state laws pertaining to the incarceration of persons.
- Knowledge of first aid and CPR techniques.
- Knowledge of the safe use of power tools and lawn equipment.
- Skill in the use of self-defense techniques, including firearms.
- Skill in problem solving and decision-making.
- Skill in management and supervision.
- Skill in the preparation of reports and records.
- Skill in oral and written communication.
Minimum Educational and Training Requirements Ability to read, write, and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent. No experience requirements. Possession of or ability to readily obtain certification by the Georgia Department of Corrections. This position is required to supervise state inmate labor. Employee must pass P.O.S.T. certification within the time frame required by this department, which is normally within six months but may be altered. Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
Physical Requirements The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity. The work is typically performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

Retirement Plan The Columbus Consolidated Government offers a defined benefit retirement plan to eligible employees who work in General Government and in Public Safety. Employees in the pension plan must meet both age and years of service requirements to qualify for retirement. The current vesting period is ten years, and the current pension contribution rate is 8% of your gross salary.
