Job Summary:

To provide financial counseling to the patients of the practice. Including a financial screening for special programs, verifying insurance benefits, establishing payment plans and assisting patients in understanding their plans.

Essential Job Duties:

• Knowledge of Athena and hospital systems including patient demographics, insurance and charge entry.
• Recognizes the need for confidentiality in dealing with patients, physicians and coworkers.
• Secures needed medical documentation required or requested Insurance companies.
• Works with physician or medical record staff to ensure correct diagnosis/procedures are reported to insurance carriers.
• Contacts Insurance companies via phone or web to verify benefits for procedures being performed.
• Informs patients of any financial obligation and arranges payment plans.
• Screens patients based on income for specialty programs that patient may qualify for.
• Counsel's patients with outstanding balances, collection balances and develops a plan to help patient pay account off.
• Keeps up to date on all billing and benefit changes for insurance carriers.
• Monitors claims for missing information and authorizations.
• Answers questions from patients, clerical staff and insurance companies. Identifies and resolves patient billing complaints.
• Performs various collection actions including contacting patients by phone, correcting and resubmitting claims to payers.
• All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent required.

Experience: Minimum of one (1) year experience working in a physician's office.

Prior patient accounting and collections experience preferred.

Licensure/Certification: None required.

Skills: Above average communication skills and ability to relate effectively to the public and health care professionals.
